Custom Session Settings
Hummingbird allows you to customize your users' session settings to balance security and convenience. Properly configured session settings can help reduce the risk of unauthorized access, especially in cases where a user's device is lost, stolen, or unattended, helping to safeguard your organization's data.
Available session settings
Hummingbird offers two methods for controlling the duration of user sessions:
Maximum inactivity time
Maximum session length
These settings are designed to help protect your data and help you comply with security best practices.
1. Maximum Inactivity Time
What it does
This setting automatically logs users out after a designated period of inactivity in the Hummingbird app. When a user stops interacting with the app (no clicks, typing, or page navigation), the inactivity timer begins its countdown.
When to use it
This setting ensures that, if users walk away from their computers or are otherwise no longer actively using Hummingbird, their sessions are terminated automatically, preventing unauthorized access.
Recommended settings
For standard office environments: 15-30 minutes
For high-security environments: 5-10 minutes
For public terminals: 2-5 minutes
2. Maximum Session Length
What it does
This setting enforces a fixed time limit on user sessions. Once the specified duration is reached, the user is automatically logged out, regardless of whether they are actively using the Hummingbird app. For new Hummingbird customers this will default to 8 hours.
When to use it
This is an important security measure that helps minimize the risk of unauthorized access during an open session, such as if a user forgets to lock their computer at the end of the workday. Hummingbird recommends setting this value to align with your users' typical working hours.
Recommended settings
Standard setting: 8-10 hours (typical workday)
Extended workday environments: 12-14 hours
High-security environments: 4-6 hours
